P.A.R.T.Y. IN-HOSPITAL

The P.A.R.T.Y. In-hospital model has been running at The Alfred since 2009. It is a full day program with a combination of presentations and small group activities; participants have the opportunity to visit the Emergency & Trauma Centre (E&TC), the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and the Burns and Trauma Wards where they often have the opportunity to engage with patients and their families. The interactions in the ICU and wards allow insight into the many consequences that patients, families and health professionals are faced with due to injury. Allied health professionals from Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Orthotics and Prosthetics, and Speech take participants through the rehabilitation processes trauma patients undertake with interactive exercises to demonstrate the challenges patients go through as they try to return to independence and pre-trauma activities. An injury survivor concludes the day by sharing their story to show the impact their injury has had on them and their families.

P.A.R.T.Y. at The Alfred has delivered its program to over 6500 participants across a variety of cohorts.

P.A.R.T.Y. On

The P.A.R.T.Y. On Program is a new initiative from The Alfred’s P.A.R.T.Y. Program team, adapted from the content found in the other program models. This model is aimed for older youth in the community aged 15-24 years old and their peers and families. The program contains material from pre-filmed and live segments and will follow discussions around the care that trauma patients often receive. The 2.5-hour session may include pre-hospital and Alfred Health critical care clinicians, allied health professionals and a trauma patient. The program is typically run from the lecture theatre on-site at The Alfred Campus.

Whilst senior school students have greater access to the program via our schools programs, it is important to provide older youth in our communities the opportunities hear the program’s key messages. This is a time where young adults are becoming more independent and have greater autonomy away from their families through experiences such as university, work, and travel. Even if youth have some knowledge of risk-taking consequences, it is a good chance for a refresher, especially through a program delivered by those who deal with trauma daily.

P.A.R.T.Y. ONLINE

The COVID-19 pandemic experienced in Australia has meant that social distancing has been required to stop the spread of the virus. This has had far reaching consequences for everyone and has affected most peoples’ private lives, contact with peers and family, workplaces, and education delivery.

Due to COVID 19, the P.A.R.T.Y. Online Program has been developed for remote delivery to senior school students in the classroom. It is an abridged version of the In-hospital program and has been designed to be delivered within a double lesson period. It is a mix of pre-recorded and live interactive sessions and includes presentations involving nurses, trauma doctors, allied health clinicians, Ambulance Victoria Paramedics and a trauma survivor. It has currently been delivered to over 2000 participants.

P.A.R.T.Y. Outreach

P.A.R.T.Y. Outreach is an offsite full day program adapted from the In-hospital model. Clinicians from The Alfred travel to regional areas where they deliver the same P.A.R.T.Y messages of trauma prevention as the In-hospital program. The program is most often delivered from a performing arts centre which is transformed to reflect a working trauma hospital. Doctors, nurses, paramedics and police from the local area are involved in the delivery of the program which increases the effect and credibility of the messages given to the participants.

Since its inception, the Outreach Program has been delivered to more than 3000 regional senior school students in Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Horsham, Mildura, Shepparton, Traralgon and Warrnambool.

This program is currently on-hold.
